why dont my 97 vw passat door handles work is there a way to fix this?

all but my rear left passanger door handles do not work was there a problem with this in a lot of the passat or is it just my car, and how do i fix it?

They don't work because the rod that connects the Door Handle to the locking mechanism has somehow come undone. In order to fix this you have to take apart the inner door panel and that usually consists of a couple of screws and clips. Once that is done when you look into the door you will see a steal rod. Trace the rod to both ends to make sure its connected to the door handle and the locking mechanism. If it is not I recommend ether buying a book on the car to find the part you need to replace or taking apart another inside door panel on a door that works in order to determine the difference. AS/In if anythings broken and or disconnected. Sometimes its something as simple as a clip or screw that has popped or rattled loose to to the vibration of driving. Other times The whole thing needs to be replaced. Make sure you pay very close attention to the details in the book or on the working door because you dont want to replace everything if its just a loose screw.
