Why does my new doorknob turn freely when locked (inside)? It keeps people out, but won't keep my kids in.?

Schlage Door knob. Keyed Entry from outside; turn button in the knob on the inside. Works fine from outside...when the door is locked, you can't turn the knob outside the house. But it turns and opens freely inside the house. This seems weird to me, because I can't lock it from inside and the "check" to make sure its locked because its always "unlocked" from inside. Did I install it wrong?

you have what is called a "store room lock" Locks from the outside, but it still can be opened from the inside. These cause alot of people to lock their keys in the house........ Just get a new Lock Set. You can get a brand called Kwikset from any hardware store for about 12 bucks, Not as good as schlage, but okay. A Schlage will cost you about 25 bucks. When you buy it, just make sure it is an Entry Lock set and not another store room lock.
