Did victorian cookery book publishers / printers attribute all editions. ?
for example would they have printed the first four editions of a book on an original embossed cover and perhaps not recording an edition until the 5th?
The printers in question were Charles Dickens and Evans,Crystal Palace Press (circa 1882)
the 1st edition not dated circa 1882, the 5th edition is not dated, the 6th edition is dated 1884
I have no Reference to a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition
thanks
Is it likely that the 2nd, 3rd & 4th editions of a particular may not have been noted as being such, when all the remaining edittions from 5th up to 23rd were noted with their edition numbers?
Regards
I don't really understand what you're asking.
But, for example, Hannah Glasse's cookery books ("The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy") has roughly 20 editions (dating from about 1747 to 1800). The printer's information in most of these editions has been left out. Often we only have, for example: "Printed for the Author, and sold at ..." (this is taken from the 3rd edition of the cookery book). However, the writer's name is always printed on the front page.
Be aware that this is for one specific cookery book (by Hannah Glasse), and I don't know about cookery books printed by Charles Dickens and Evans, but I would say it might be more or less the same.
EDIT: yes it is very likely. Not all editions are dated or given an "edition number" (say, 5th, 6th, 7th edition etc.). Sometimes, especially with books such as cookery books, you will find the printer only stating that more recipes were added. Thus, adding these new recipes makes it a new edition but they do not state that it's the 2nd or 3rd edition or something.
Good luck
